Stumped as to what to give everyone on your Christmas list? Already dreading the prospect of fighting the crowds in the malls?

Cityfarm has a suggestion. We can help you get your Christmas shopping done early and with no fuss. No driving. No shopping in busy malls. No ribbons or wrapping required. And – a real bonus – a gift with long-lasting value, one that will benefit children and youth, both now and in the future. It costs about $50 for a child to spend a day at Cityfarm. Located on a four-acre site on Riverbend Market Gardens in northeast Edmonton, Cityfarm is a place for city kids to “dig in”. They build forts, plant pumpkins and marigolds, dig potatoes, chase butterflies, savour the sweet taste of a tomato ripe from the vine, and get their hands (and clothes) dirty while feeding potato bugs to chickens, collecting eggs, and baking muffins in a clay oven. It’s a place where kids discover that carrots grow in dirt, are not all evenly cylindrical in shape and are actually very yummy.

How can you get involved?

  • Sponsor one child for a day at Cityfarm for $50 (or several for a larger donation).
  • Sponsor a child on behalf of a gift to someone else.
  • Mention this gift preference to friends and family, asking them to direct the amount for the gift they were going to buy for you towards sponsoring a child at Cityfarm in your name.
  • Invite colleagues and fellow employees to participate by pooling the amount generally used in the company Christmas gift exchange towards sponsorship of a child.
  • Contribute an individual or company/organization (group) prize (or prizes).
  • Forward the pdf file of the flier (attached/enclosed) to friends and family on your contact list.

What will this gift give you?

  • The satisfaction of helping a child better understand the complexity of growing food, the benefits of eating healthy food and exposure to a healthy outdoors experience in a positive and supportive community.

Prizes!

  • Eligibility for pretty cool prizes! The individual and the company/organization sponsoring the most children will be treated to a dinner for four with wine pairings at one of the city’s favourite dining spots: The Blue Pear, an Original Fare restaurant.
  • THE FIRST 200 PEOPLE SPONSORING A CHILD FOR will receive a hard cover copy ($40 value) of Lois Hole’s “I’ll Never Marry a Farmer”, donated by Holes Greenhouses & Garden Ltd. www.holesonline.com
  • The individual or group (corporate, organization) to sponsor the most children at Cityfarm for a Day will received a complementary dinner for four with wine pairings from The Blue Pear (www.thebluepear.com) restaurant (estimated value $800).
  • Draw Prizes: prizes drawn from all donors:
    • Dinner for 2 (without alcohol) at The Dish and the Runaway Spoon ($70 value) (www.thedishandspoon.com).
    • Set of 12 steak knives from Butchers and Packers (www.butchersandpackers.com)
    • Adidas jacket, Adidas golf shirt, travel alarm, from The Co-operators (www.cooperators.ca)
    • City of Edmonton Community Services has donated a gardening bag with tools, visors and a cloth brief case.

How can you get others involved?

  • Encourage fellow employees to sponsor a child for a day, either individually, or collectively.
  • Challenge employees from competitors to match the number of children your company is sponsoring.
  • Place fliers in staff rooms or other suitable locations.
  • Include the pdf of the flier on your company website with an invitation to participate/support.
  • Include this message or the pdf in any other promotion (e.g. newsletters).

We believe that the impact Cityfarm makes on 1100 annual visitors (many from disadvantaged areas) makes a huge difference, not just on the actual day, but also in developing healthy lifestyle habits.
