Photo Journal

October 22: The kit has arrived and we can start assembling.

October 24 (Day 1): Tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers, chile peppers, beans, basil and parsley have been sown.

October 29 (Day 6): Some have sprouted!

November 6 (Day 14): Time to transplant the eager shoots.

November 15 (Day 23): Bird's eye view of the growing garden. We moved the boxes to the floor as the lamp will have to be moved up with the plants.

November 22 (Day 30): The cucumbers love the continuous water supply from the tank below. The radishes are very spindly.... possibly it's too hot under the lamp for them.

December 5 (Day 43): The cucumbers are blooming! There are no bees for pollination in the office, therefore we're using a small paint brush to transfer pollen from flower to flower.

December 11 (Day 49): Now the monster cukes need additional support (strings from the ceiling) and the lamp had to be raised. We might get some radishes after all.

December 13 (Day 51): Cucumbers are taking shape.

December 19 (Day 57): Bean harvest from the jungle.

December 27 (Day 65): Wow! What happened here!?

Hmm... maybe the coffee grounds should have been worked into the soil.

January 2 (Day 72): The tomatoes are again out of control and need severe pruning. A couple of cucumbers are almost ready to be harvested.

January 23 (Day 93): A Sungold cherry tomato is almost ripe. Some of the flowers did not develop into fruit... I now know that each cluster of flowers has to be tapped gently every day to ensure cross-pollination within each flower. Once I started tapping the flower clusters, more fruit was developing. Outside, bees and the wind take care of pollination.

February 7 (Day 108): Dr. Mirza, Greenhouse Specialist, came to help us figure out what was wrong with some of our plants. Shown here are cucumbers with nitrogen deficiencies: pointed fruit (on left) and very light green at one end (fruit on bottom right). We need to make sure that fertilizer is added every time we water. The next photo shows leaves with calcium deficiency: the leaves have light spots and they are cupping. A calcium and magnesium fertilizer should help the plants' growth.

February 19 (Day 120): Some Sweet 100 cherry tomatoes are ready to be enjoyed.

February 26 (Day 127): A healthy pot of carrots, and beautiful Sungold tomatoes.
